“Angels One Five” DVD free with Daily Mail (UK) 13/02/09

One for the completist’s completist, the 1952 Jack Dawkins movie “Angels One Five” is available today (Friday 13th February 2009) as a free DVD from the UK tabloid “The Daily Mail” (although, the actual disc is only available on production of a voucher in either W H Smiths or Tescos).  “Angels One Five” (or rather, Angel 1-5) was of course the name of Jimmy Cauty’s first band, which he formed with Cressida Bowyer (later Cauty) in 1981, recording one single and a Peel Session.  (Note: an earlier band called “Angels One Five”, who released a single called “Toddy” in 1973, do not seem to have any KLF connection).

Angels One 5 – A Brief History

Not much was known about Angels One 5, reportedly the first musical station in Jimmy Cauty’s artistic history. However, the last few weeks shed some light on this chapter. First of all, it appears that the band’s correct name is “Angels One 5″, which gives various results in Google indeed.

On 1st July 1981, the band recorded a Peel Session on BBC Radio 1, performing four different tracks – “Cut And Dried”, “Accident In Studio 4″, “Living For The Future” and “Workface” – aired the follwing week. According to sources, this was the last Peel Session recorded in the Langham 1 Studio.

Despite its age, there even seems to exist a recording of this paricular Peel Session, since at least one member of the KLF mailing list claims to have listened to it. Chances of this rare recording to apear online anywhere are quite low, though.

In 1982, their first and (apparently) only single, “Cut And Dried”, was released on Galaxy Records, including “Countdown” as a b-side. Using the proper band name, the 7″ turns up in various places online. For example, GEMM lists various copies from different sellers.

While the history of Angels One 5 was a rather short one, these bits fill some previously white spots on the map of Jimmy’s early days.
