Epilogue
2007-08-26 | Homepage
Daniel and me decided that, no matter what the reasons for the temporary stop of the website, it would be unfair for all of you not to be able to read all the material that has been gathered throughout the last years, so for now, everything is back to how it was before, except that there will be no further updates until the last word on a new site has been spoken.
We are not dead.
This Is A KLF Online Communication...
2007-08-19 | Homepage
Whenever questioned about THE MANUAL, Bill Drummond replied that its essence was that, whenever you want to start something, you should not wait for someone to come along and tell you to do it. Just do it. I think this also applies to putting things to a rest.
From the days when I joined Daniel, Jens and Torsten to work on KLF ONLINE, our website has grown larger with every year, having seen various changes, added features and layouts. I say "our website" cause although I was not part of the initial list of members, after putting about five years of work into it, I adopted it as my child just like everyone of us.
The ever-growing list of added features, however, is one of the reasons I am writing these lines now. Both the code and the interal database structures have gone through so many incarnations that large parts of it are still patchworked into the (not anymore) current website, while other parts seem to never see the finish line.
Another reason is that content management currently is a pain. Most things happen directly in the database, making it impossible for others to add, update or delete parts when needed. I had added some things to change this, but they only add up to the clutter which the source code had become lately.
That is why, in my opinion, the whole website needs a fresh start. Tear it down and start rebuilding it from the grounds up. So much for the technical side of things.
On a more personal note - well, life moves on. There are many other things on my to-do list which just do not seem to happen due to the fact that, even after great time management, a day still has only 24 hours. And while being able to contribute to one of the few remaining KLF websites was a priviledge at first, it slowly has become a duty which seems to consume more and more time. Time which I would rather invest in different things nowadays.
There are some website projects waiting inside my mind to get out for... well, years. Things I know I would absolutely love to create and of which I hope will be interesting for others as well. But in order to get these things started, KLF ONLINE has to move down on my priority list.
This is no complete departure from this page, though. It just means that, as I wrote before, things have to be started from scratch again, not repeating the mistakes that have been made. A new version of KLF ONLINE will eventually grow and prosper again. Hey, someone has to do it, right? ![]()
This is not the end. There WILL BE further communications.
Cheers, Thomas
"Burning A Million Quid" Screening In Berlin Part II
2007-08-12 | Miscellaneous
Thomas Ecke, initiator of the Silent Protest Berlin marches, points out that there is more information about the upcoming screening of Gimpo's "Burning A Million Quid" film on Wir Nennen Es Arbeit ("We call it work"). Day 1 (August 23rd) stands under the motto "Burning Money", so the inclusion of the screening is most fitting. The film isn't explicitely mentioned on the website yet, though.
Thanks Thomas!
UPDATE: It's listed now. ![]()
For A Fistful Of Covers
2007-08-10 | Miscellaneous
Following yesterday's news of the People Of K's cover version of "Justified And Ancient", we wanted to share a number of links to other cover versions Marco and I dug out on Beatport some time ago. While most of them are available on 12" or CD as well, their site offers full WAV downloads as well, which saves you time and work if you want to listen to them without turntables, like in your car, on your mp3 player or under the shower.
First we got Antidote's cover version of "What Time Is Love?". The compilation the link points to is only one of varoius releases that features their track - funny enough, the single features the right track names but links to the wrong tracks. I wonder if they ever fix that one... the b-side track "Trancentral" can also be found on Beatport, but unlike the a-side, the track title is the only obvious KLF link.
The digital version of Marascia's uncredited cover version of WTIL? not only features the original 12" mix but a previously unavailable radio edit, too. And for those of you who already got them, there's also a 2006 remix which is much more electro in sound and apparently never appeared anywhere else.
The latest remixes of DFX's "Relax Your Body" - whose original version had been included on the "What Time Is Love? Story" - by Hacker and Martini Brös have been available on 12" before and are featured on Beatport as well, and while the latter isn't an essential mix and only seems to feature the vocals, the Hacker remix sticks to the RIFF and is therefore easily recognized. This also applies to Dolly La Parton's version of the same track - a cover version of a cover version, so to speak. However, this one sounds more chopped up and should appeal to everyone who liked the KLF/Justin Timberlake mashup by El Barto & Liam B.
And no, "What Time Is Love?" isn't the only song of which cover versions can be found online, although it's the most prominent one without question. For those who missed out, you can also purchase Slusnik Luna's progressive remix of "Last Train To Trancentral", which is easily one of the best cover versions of said track. On a related note, Beatport also features Franchino, but his catalogue unfortunately doesn't include "Vamos", a mix of LTTT as well. Can't have everything I guess.
Strange enough, there was also another cover version of "What Time Is Love?" by Parisian psychedelic trance DJs Altöm which got deleted from the pages of Beatport before we could buy it (I got a screenshot, though), so the only way to listen to that one would be their MySpace page. Questions about a possible single release remain unanswered until now, but there's a compilation at Juno which features the track. It's up to you to decide if that justifies buying a complete album, though...
